Antares Group
Q:Who is Antares and why should I investment with them?
A:Antares is an investment manager specialising in the creation and management of alternative investment products. Antares recognises that increasingly, delivering superior risk-adjusted returns requires looking beyond traditional strategies and asset classes to a new generation of investment options - alternative investments.
Adding alternative investments to a traditional long only portfolio of shares, fixed income, cash and property may provide diversification as well as higher returns and reduced overall portfolio volatility, although each alternative investment differs in risk/return characteristics.
Antares retains specialist knowledge and expertise in alternative investments, adopting a ‘best of breed' approach. A strong focus on sustainable competitive advantage is applied to each alternative asset class and strategy. Antares' team of investment professionals has depth and breadth of expertise gained from a diverse range of investment sectors.
Antares closely monitors investor demand and emerging investment trends globally, then structures, develops and manages alternative investment funds. Where necessary, Antares collaborates within specialist external alliances to leverage joint expertise in alternative investments for investors. Research and analysis drives investment decisions. Technical expertise and strong risk management underpin everything we do. We believe this makes us the Smart Alternative.
Antares operates autonomously with an investment management focus but, as wholly owned subsidiaries of the NAB Group (within the nabCapital division) benefits from its experience, expertise and resources. Through the connection with the NAB Group, Antares has the ability to access significant expertise and assets that may be considered unusual and/or difficult to source. This opens up new and different investment opportunities for our clients.
Antares believes that its combination of deep market knowledge, understanding of clients' needs and broad access to diverse investment opportunities, translates into superior investment choices for our clients.

Antares Lodestar Absolute Return Fund
Q:What does the Trust invest in?
A:The Trust's investment universe is companies and other securities predominantly listed on the Australian Stock Exchange.
The Trust can invest in listed equity securities and hybrid equity securities such as convertible notes, redeemable preference shares and partly paid shares. The Trust will usually have some cash investments and will use options, futures and other derivatives.
Q:Who is Lodestar?
A:Lodestar is a specialist Australian equities investment manager established in 2005 that has been appointed as investment manager of the Trust. Lodestar has been appointed after reviewing the Australian market for an investment manager that could satisfy investor demand for expertise in this investment strategy.
The core of the investment team has worked together for a number of years, having previously been part of the Australian equity teams at larger funds management organisations. Lodestar has been managing the Trust since its inception in February 2007.
Q:What is Lodestar's investment philosophy?
A:Lodestar's philosophy centres on the belief that sharemarkets are not perfectly efficient. As a result of imperfect information and sharemarket inefficiencies, securities often become mispriced - either overvalued or undervalued. Active portfolio management is the best way to take advantage of these mispricing opportunities.
Given this philosophy, Lodestar applies the following investment tenets ("four pillars") aimed at generating superior returns over an investment cycle, and their investment processes and risk controls reflect them:
1. Sharemarkets trend upwards over time; consequently the investment manager needs to invest for the long term.
2. Sharemarkets periodically suffer from "bear" markets. The investment manager should be able to take advantage of these situations.
3. The stock selection process ranks relevant stocks from extremely attractive to extremely unattractive. Stocks that are particularly attractive are invested in until they become fully valued or their fortunes change and they cease to be attractive. Equally, the investment manager should also be able to take advantage of extremely unattractive securities and enhance returns by short selling stocks that have a strong risk of an absolute negative return.
4. Stock selection must be executed in a consistent and disciplined fashion within a well established framework.
With these four pillars, Lodestar aims to achieve superior absolute returns from the sharemarket over an investment cycle.
